Learning a new language is a truly transformative experience.

For me, it all started with reading short stories and listening to music in different languages growing up. This seemingly small act had a butterfly effect so colossal that it ended up taking my life across the world to new places, where I met fascinating people and got opportunities I would’ve never imagined possible ten years ago.

I love reflecting on how one decision shaped my life:

What if I hadn’t chosen to live in Brazil with my grandma in high school?

I wouldn’t have deepened my connection with my roots or met an American Foreign Service Officer who inspired me to major in International Relations. And if I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have met my best friend in college who I eventually studied abroad with in France.

And what if I had never signed up for my first French class?

I wouldn’t have opened my mind to the world of Le Petit Prince, let alone considered studying in France for a year exchange program. Without French, I wouldn’t have befriended a fellow fille au pair in Paris, studied at the Sorbonne, or discovered Chinese culture. I wouldn’t have lived in Shanghai, become fluent in Mandarin, or realized my passion for languages through writing and teaching.
